Supporting Cambodia’s Forgotten Muslim Communities

Based on what we witnessed first-hand during ACE’s recent field visit to Cambodia.

In rural Cambodia, Muslim communities are working hard to rebuild their lives and preserve their faith. Yet many families continue to face severe poverty, unreliable access to clean water and limited educational opportunities for their children.

During our visit, we saw these challenges first-hand. We also witnessed resilient communities, committed teachers and families determined to build a better future. Here you can see the home of a family in Kampung Lveang Soksan, in Kratie, Cambodia.

ACE is working alongside trusted local partners to provide immediate assistance while developing projects that can create lasting, sustainable change.

Rainwater Collector

What We Witnessed

In some of the villages we visited, almost every household was living in circumstances that would make them eligible to receive Zakat. Families had constructed basic containers lined with plastic sheets to collect and store rainwater. However, after a prolonged period without rain, the containers were completely dry.

When we asked villagers what support would make the greatest difference, their first request was for a water well. Reliable access to clean water would support:

  • Drinking and cooking
  • Washing and personal hygiene
  • Growing food and cultivating village land
  • Livestock
  • The wider health and wellbeing of the community
The communities also asked for a place where they could pray together and where their children could receive Islamic education.

Our Work in Cambodia

ACE’s developing Cambodia programme brings together immediate relief, education, essential village infrastructure and long-term sustainability.

Education and Student Sponsorship

For some children, completing primary school marks the end of their education—not because they lack ability or ambition, but because the nearest secondary schools are too far away and their families cannot afford the associated costs.

An annual sponsorship of approximately £375 (US$500) provides:

  • Secondary-school fees
  • Accommodation
  • Food
  • A small monthly allowance
  • Travel home during school holidays

Clean Water for Rural Villages

Some villages have no dependable source of clean water and remain reliant on seasonal rainfall.

ACE aims to support the development of sustainable water wells that can provide water for drinking, cooking and washing, while also supporting livestock and agriculture.

Masjid and Madrassah Development

The villages we visited longed for a suitable place in which to pray and somewhere their children could learn about Islam.

A combined masjid and madrassah would provide a lasting centre for worship, Islamic education and community life.

Supporting Tajdid Academy

Tajdid Academy provides primary education and Islamic teaching to children from poor and vulnerable families, including orphans and children from recently converted Muslim families.

The school receives no government funding and faces considerable financial challenges. ACE is exploring ways to support its immediate needs while helping it become more financially sustainable—including a proposal to secure a ten-hectare cashew farm capable of generating long-term income for the school and creating local employment.

Iftaar in Cambodia Kampung in 2026

Iftaar was provided for the whole village for 5 nights from ACE's donors in the UK in 2025 and in 2026 through our Malaysian Partner, DAHIKMAH.

Support That Has Already Reached Families

ACE has already supported Cambodia’s Muslim communities through:

  • Five days of village iftaars during Ramadan 2025 and five days in 2026
  • Post-Eid food parcels for vulnerable families after Ramadan 2025 and 2026
  • Secondary-school sponsorships for children unable to continue their education
  • A field visit to meet communities and understand their needs directly
This work demonstrates what can be achieved when compassionate donors, local knowledge and trusted partnerships come together.

Working through Trusted Local Partners

ACE works with people and organisations that understand the communities they serve. Our relationship with Tajdid Academy enables support to be directed towards children and families whose circumstances are known and verified locally.

The Academy also helps oversee the secondary-school sponsorship programme and will provide ACE with an individual progress report for each sponsored student every six months. As our Cambodia programme develops, ACE will continue strengthening its due diligence, financial oversight, safeguarding, monitoring and reporting arrangements.

A water well can transform daily life for a group of village families. A masjid and madrassah can provide a lasting home for worship and learning. A sustainable income-generating project can support a school and create employment for years to come.
